Thanks to everyone who came out to "Root for Reading" on November 17th! We had such a great time celebrating reading with local athletes and mascots! Can't wait for next year!
James Island Elementary shared their giving spirit by wrapping up the school year with a food drive for James Island Outreach. JIES students and families donated non-perishable food items to the outreach center that serves the James Island and Folly Beach community. A combination of outreach services from several area churches, James Island Outreach provides, food, utility assistance, information and case management services for area families. The offices of James Island Outreach are on the grounds of Bethany United Methodist Church on Maybank Highway.
Thank you JIES students!

Great Job 4th Graders and Mrs. Sim!
Our JIES Fourth Graders under the direction of Mrs. Sim, our Music Teacher, presented an original musical titled "We Shall Overcome" on Thursday and Friday of last week. The program featured music from the slave era and the 1960s. It was an incredible and moving show! Great job to all of you! Pictures are on the left tab under 4th grade musical!
Seuss Week!
Thanks to everyone who made the 2011 Seuss Week such a success. We welcomed 6 local doctors who read to 17 classes! We also had a record number of families come out for our 1st Annual Seuss Night! The children enjoyed Seuss activities all week long in their classrooms as well as "Seussville" in the Media Center! JIES students also reached the reading goal of 50,000 minutes in 3 weeks, so Mrs. Fickling surprised the students as "Mama Thing" - the mother of Thing One and Thing Two. She lead everyone in a rousing 'Macarena!'
Pictures (and video!) are coming soon!

Spotlight on ART!

"Reading Rules at JIES!"
We had a week full of reading excitement! Special thanks to all the teachers and students who made the week extra special, especially those who dressed as their favorite book character on Friday! Reading really came alive at JIES!
Thanks also to all of our community partners who helped us "Root for Reading" on Thursday, Nov. 11th. We welcomed the College of Charleston Womens Golf Team, Charlie the Riverdog, Dan Eves from the Stingrays, Cool Ray the Stingray, Cheerleaders from James Island Charter High School, 3 Citadel Football Players, and the Citadel Band Drumline! Everyone enjoyed a hot dog dinner made extra special with sweet potato mustard and blue cheese cole slaw courtesy of Jack's Cosmic Dogs! We had a great turnout and loads of fun celebrating literacy! Check out a couple videos below from our night - photos are coming soon!
"Learning SOARS in our Outdoor Classroom Butterfly Launch!"
Our second grade students have been learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. Under the direction of Bill McCord with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, they recently gathered in the school’s outdoor classroom to take part in the launch of tagged Monarch butterflies. 125 lucky students had their noses used as launching pads for the butterflies! This activity was a wonderful culminating activity for our second graders who just finished studying insects. Selected students from other grades also participated in the launch, while all students enjoyed observing the butterflies’ behavior and predicting what they would do once released! Many of the butterflies found their way to the butterfly bushes in the classroom while others soared, avoiding the birds!
JIES 2nd graders enjoyed a field trip to Cypress Gardens on September 17th. They enjoyed the Butterfly House, a tour of the Cypress Swamp as well as many other activities. See a few pictures below!
