Fourth Grade STEAM Highlights

Fourth grade reports...
Fourth grade has kicked off the school year with a bang! Students have been engaged in various STEAM inspired activities. During Math, students made 3D models of geometric solids using marshmallows and toothpicks. To take these 3D models a step further, students dipped their creations into a soap solution to show the faces of a solid object. Fourth graders also went on an American Revolution driven field trip to the Old Exchange Building, Provost Dungeon, Heyward house, and Powder Magazine in Downtown Charleston.  Students engaged in a science experiment with leaves, practiced shooting a musket, and learned about the brave colonial forces that fought in the American Revolution. In October, students worked in groups to engineer and test candy corn catapults. It was a total success! We had candy corn zipping out of our classrooms…what great engineers we have at JIES! Students have also been working hard with Mrs. Sim to perform with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra to go with our recycling program sponsored by Sunoco. Our fourth graders even took on the role of being an ecologist and tried to inspire others to reduce, reuse, and recycle by writing informative papers on the matter. To take this program a step further, our fourth graders used recycled items to create amazing musical instruments. Fourth graders have amazed teachers and ECM partners with sculpting creepy, crawly critters. Art Buzz has been working with us to sculpt, paper mache, and write nonfiction essays about insects to go along with our animal unit in science. You should take a peek at our works of art! Great things are happening in the fourth grade! steam
